Knowing who your competitors are, what they offer and at what price levels might help you decide where you want to be, whether you decide to follow the trends or go your own way.

3. Know yourself and your business

Understanding your own strengths and weaknesses will help you build your brand authentically without compromising your message, values or disappointing your customers. Simple SWOT analysis can go a long way.

There are many more factors that influence your brand strategy, but in general as a small business owner you cannot be adequately prepared to establish a brand strategy without a keen understanding of your industry (niche), competition and yourself.  Once this is assessed, you will need to consider and compare how these conditions match up to your business’ resources and capabilities.  This information remains essential for establishing an effective brand strategy.
