How to Develop Social Media Strategy

For some, social media marketing has proven to be effective in promoting their company and driving business. For others, social media marketing fails. Why does it work for some and not for others? The key to successful marketing is structure and commitment. Anyone can create a social media profile, but without structure and commitment it probably won’t help you to achieve the goals you are looking to achieve. If this has happened to your social media presence, you aren’t alone. My suggestion? Develop social media strategy and stick with it. Here are four tips to help you stay on track and move forward with your marketing techniques:

1. Make a Commitment and stick to it

How To Develop Social Media Strategy - Commitment

You don’t have to get married with your social media strategy, but get focused, implement ruthlessly and evaluate it thoroughly before you revisit and tweak it.

Before you even start making a plan for your social media efforts, make a promise to yourself that you are going to commit. Successful social media marketing doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it can take many months to start developing a solid list of followers, fans, or subscribers. Many business owners expect that their social media efforts will take off in a matter of weeks and, when they don’t, hope is lost. It is important to remember that even the most successful social media marketers had to invest time and commitment into their efforts. If you can do this without giving up, you will be very happy with the payoff in the end.

Find Your Spot

It’s important to be where your clients are. Choose your focus wisely.

2. Find Your Spot

There are hundreds of different ways that you can use social media to promote your business and in no way will you ever have the time to use them all. As such, you need to find your best fit. Where you will fit in best on the internet depends on several things, the most important being your target audience. For example, someone who is looking to promote their business in the professional world might want to increase their presence on LinkedIn. Alternatively, someone who is promoting to teenagers or adults should focus their attention on popular networks like Facebook and Twitter.

3. Schedule Time

As said previously, one of the biggest reasons that business owners fail at social media marketing is because they lack commitment. If you want to attract fans, followers, or subscribers to your website you need to constantly engage them with new information, updates, or other entertaining engagements. Set aside a time slot each day that you can devote to social media marketing techniques – and then commit to it.

4. Establish Yourself as an Expert

If you want your fans and followers to take you seriously you need to establish yourself as an expert. While you want to be sure to discuss your own business much of the time, you also want to put in the effort to educate others about related topics. Whether you want to start up your own blog, send out weekly newsletters, or explore the newest trends, writing expert content can greatly improve your social media strategy.

Other tips how to develop social media strategy for your business:

  • Run contests and promotions
  • Begin with the basics, and then expand
  • Outsource tasks that you don’t have time for

There are many more aspects that lead to more clients and higher profits, but once you have followed these few tips on how to develop social media strategy, you will be well on your way towards better utilization of your resources and greater success in your online business.

Question: Do you have a social media strategy in place? Are the results mirroring the effort or do you need to revisit and tweak it? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

  2. I think point number two was the most helpful for me. I need to really look at that since I am on TOO MANY networks right now.

These tips are so essential. I especially appreciate your “reality check” in telling people this takes time… like all marketing, it’s about building relationships of trust. And scheduling time! I try to schedule three times per day to check in with social media, engage and share. I like having set time limits for this or I end up spending too much time on Facebook, mostly. Good stuff, Silvia!
