How to Increase Your Team’s Productivity

When we compete with others it causes us to dig deep and perform at a higher level than we do on our own. Competition can be a double-edged sword. It can be the fuel needed to create momentum and propel your group forward when done right. On the other hand, nothing will cause the wheels to fall off the cart faster than competition gone wrong.

We all benefit from competition in many ways. We enjoy superior products at a lower price, greater levels of service and higher quality of life thanks to competition.

Air travel is safer thanks to competition. Surgical procedures have higher success rates due to competition. Fortunately, flight school and medical schools do not accept everybody who applies.

So how can your business or organization benefit from competition and how can you create friendly competition that brings the best out of your members or employees?

Lay the Ground Rules. Everybody has a different opinion about competition. Make sure you define competition in a manner that will be beneficial to all. My favorite definition and the one that applies most to competition within a company or organization is the Latin. The Latin definition of compete is “to strive together”. Competition within a group is about the team working together for a common goal.

Focus on what’s important. In society today we seem more concerned with who won and who lost. The real focus should be on doing your personal best and the process to achieve your personal best. The results will typically take care of themselves when your focus is on personal best and the process.

Avoid rivalry and comparisons. As a leader in your organization, avoid pitting one individual against another with the thought that this will increase productivity. Rivalry can cause dissension and disharmony within your ranks. Rivalry puts the individual’s needs above the teams.

Asking a person to be more like “so-and-so” can be just as damaging. As parents, we learn not to compare one of our children to his or her sibling. The same principle can be applied to our organization. Comparisons do not allow room for individuals to be, well, individuals and can be detrimental to how this person sees himself.

Create a Level Playing Field. It is important to make the rules and goals clear and well-defined in order to have successful competition within your team. This is also a great way to have measured results and make it clear what you expect from your people. Communication is vital when creating friendly competition among your people. Make sure everybody is on the same page.

Competition, when done correctly, can be a great asset to your business or organization. It can improve morale, increase productivity and even be fun.
