How to Market Your Business through Social Media

It’s called Facebook. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Or Twitter? Or Digg? Most of us are actually somewhat addicted to our social media outlets. And why not? Has there ever been a better way to stay in touch? To find old friends? To stay involved with the day to day lives of all our friends and family? No, never. Our social media is awesome, and we probably wouldn’t even know how to live without it if it were to disappear. OMG, can you even imagine? So, with social media playing such an important role in our lives, what’s stopping you from using social media to market your business?

The Old Ways of Marketing Aren’t Working Anymore

Answer these questions:

  • How many people listen to commercial-free satellite radio?
  • How many people TiVo their favorite shows, skipping over the commercials entirely?
  • How many people read the newspaper online, eliminating the need to flip through ads?

That puts a different spin on the old ways of marketing, doesn’t it? If people are no longer listening to radio ads or watching commercials or sifting through the flyers in the paper, then how are you supposed to get your business in front of them? How do you let them know what you have to offer? How will customers even find out that you exist?

The good news is that you can still successfully market your business. You just need to start thinking of marketing in a new way. The even better news is that the new marketing methods, when properly implemented, can be even more powerful and effective than the old ones!

Enter Social Media Marketing

It should come as no surprise that successful marketing campaigns in today’s marketplace are conducted largely on the internet. This is, after all, one place where everyone visits. The only trouble with this is that the competition for your business is unfathomable. Because of this, it’s more important than ever that you are able to set your business apart from the others; that all of these millions of potential customers have a reason to choose your business over everyone else.

How do you do this? By making friends!

This is where social media marketing can help your business rise to the top. This is where you have the opportunity to become a real person, a likeable business owner whom people would love to do business with, as opposed to a nameless, faceless website. When you utilize the massive power of social media to market your business, you offer your customers the closest thing to a personal, face-to-face experience possible in online business.

If you network with local clientele, social media helps you stay in touch with your customers while keeping them up to date on special events going on at your business. When you’re dealing with nationwide or even worldwide clientele, social media connections give your customers a personal reason to buy from you instead of the hundreds of other dime-a-dozen, cookie-cutter sites out there.

To top it off, this all adds up to a fun way to promote your business! Make friends and boost your business through social media marketing!

There are some really good points in this article. You are completely right about the largest campaigns now being online – it’s so huge and the majority of people are active users of the internet. We tend to use Twitter more than Facebook because we are a B2B company, but I believe that if you’re a B2C company Facebook would be more appropriate.
You’re point of making friends is a good one – I’m fairly new to social media marketing and haven’t really sued this tactic, so will attempt it and see if my results improve.
I do agree that it helps you stay in touch with customers – it’s so easy these days – just a quick update of a status and all your followers/connections etc are able to see it, rather than sending lots of individual letters etc.
The organisation I work for uses Twitter a lot, and a few other methods, but Twitter is the main one. They’ve written a couple of blog articles on social media and how to get the most out of it, it could be useful to anyone reading this article http://www.lucidica.com/blog/category/online-marketing/social-media/
