Let’s Make Your Business Stand Out

One of the most important questions in the strategic process of making a business different and stand out in an industry is how strong the business’ competitive positioning is. Every business needs to know where it stands and how strong it is at maintaining this position to ensure that it successfully stands out to potential buyers.  A business interested in strong positioning on the market needs to examine how it ranks compared to competitors.  This includes the business’ resources as well.  It will need to be established whether or not a business is even competitive or not.

There are some general indicators of a business possessing a competitive strength.  Let’s name a few.

  • a growing customer base
  • a consistently increasing customer loyalty
  • above average profit margins.

Utilize your strengths to achieve differentiation in a relevant industry.

On the other hand, there are some general signs that a business is positioned on a weak competitive level.

  • a below average growth in revenues
  • a distinct shortage of financial resources
  • a slipping reputation with its customers
  • a business being too small to be a major factor in existing market place
  • the product or service is substandard and lacking in quality

One common technique used often to evaluate a business’ competitive strengths is the benchmarking technique.  This particular technique involves the evaluation of competitors, product quality, customer service, customer satisfaction, the actual business’ financial strength, its technological capabilities, and any possible product or service innovations that can be introduced into the industry.  The bottom line objective is to know how much of the required competitive resources and capabilities a business actually has.  The evaluation process does not just stop at the cost of activities or establishing the best practices within a relevant industry.

In conclusion, evaluating your business as having strong or high competitive strengths, might help you attain a strong competitive position, along with a distinct competitive advantage.  Being aware of a business’ strengths as well as weaknesses is essential when creating a strategy for making a business stand out.  Keep in mind that a business’ rivals are just as interested in weaknesses, because these are the very factors that will be exploited on their behalf.
