The First Step to Getting Organized

Can you imagine for a moment how nice it would be to look around and see everything in its place? Or, better yet, what if all of those tiny (out of site) places were clean and organized as well. If you are anything like me, that would be a huge relief. Although many of us do not realize it, unseen clutter that we know is there, causes stress. So, how can you get rid of that unnecessary stress? Clean it out and organize it.
The fist step to any organization project is to make a plan!! After all, it is hard to make it to your destination, if you do not know where you are going. So, grab a pen and pad and start planning. Go room by room and write down the things that need to be done there. It is important to remember that this is not a list that you will accomplish in one day, it will take time, so write down Everything.
Once your list is complete, decide how much time you can devote each day or week to your list. If you work a full time job and have a lot of family activities, you may only be able to devote an hour each week. Whatever amount of time you decide that you can devote to your “Home Organization” project, schedule it in. Write it down on you planner or calender just as you would any other appointment, and keep it.
Once you have your organizing appointment scheduled, next decide where on the list you will start. If there are certain areas of your home that are more visible when visitors stop by, you may want to begin there. Take it one room at a time, if you choose to start in the family room slowly work your way down the list. Once you have completed your list, move on to the next room. An important thing to keep in mind while you are trying to “get your home in shape” is the less clutter you have, the less mess you will have. Clean each room out as you go. Remove things that do not belong there, and go through all of the remaining items to see if you really need them, or if you could live without them. If you happen to find something that you lost a year or two ago, chances are if you have not had to buy a new one, you can live without it.
Once you have a room clean and organized, it is much easier to maintain that organization if you keep your system in place. So, make your list, schedule your appointment, and get going so you can eliminate that extra stress.
